In continuation of Digital Literacy Initiative project activities supported by Anne Frasen Fund of Consumentonbond and Consumers International,Consumer VOICE  organized Second  Digital Literacy Workshop based on Training of Trainers model at club 26 ,Noida,Sector 27  (Uttar Pradesh) on 29th June 2017.The purpose of this workshop was  to make Consumers digitally literate and also to boost their confidence to join the digital economy and society.

In the workshop various topics were covered such as digital accessibility, how to be safe online and ensuring digital security and privacy, related legal rights and available redressal avenues etc by different speakers from Consumer VOICE Team including Shri Gopal Ravi Kumar,Shri Subas Tiwari and Shri Hemant Upadhyay and Digital Expert –Shri Agam Chaudhary.

Consumer VOICE  also distributed resource material booklet “A Smart Guide to help you became digitally literate” which has covered topics like Digital literacy for uninitiated, Digital products in Online transactions, Digital E –services ,Information Technology act, Staying safe online, E-Challenges, How to protect yourself from online frauds and Grievance redressal mechanism.

There were more than 100 participants in the workshop from various walks of life like  Consumer organizations, students, senior citizens and civil society organizations. At the end of the workshop a  question -answers session was  also arranged which went off successfully.

Digital Literacy

India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world. Digital literacy is almost non-existent in a country where 25-30% of the population are illiterate. While India boasts being the world’s second fastest growing mobile market, it is lagging far behind when it comes to computer or digital literacy. Anne Frasen Fund of Consmentonbond and Consumers International is funding the digital literacy initiative which will cover across a cross-section of people and make Indians digitally aware consumers.

WHAT IS DIGITAL LITERACY

Digital literacy is the ability to find, share, and create content using technologies and internet. It involves effective use digital devices like tablets, smartphones, desktops, laptops to communicate, express and share information and knowledge. It involves an array of things which range from effective communication to cyber safety.

WHY DO WE NEED TO BE DIGITALLY LITERATE

India is taking baby steps to become digitally literate. A time will come soon when the divide will not be between literate and illiterates but literate and digital literate. The list of things one can do online is limitless and sky is not the limit. But given below are few things that one can do with digital literacy

Read and share information online – One can read and share all kinds of information that he or she wants to know about

Learn about latest methods and techniques in every field – For example a farmer can learn about using the right pesticides and new seeds, a teacher can learn new teaching methods

Banking and Financial – Digital literacyis prime for all banking needs right from online money transfer to withdrawal

Online applications – For filling online applications for government and private jobs, for submitting tender or for applying for loans

For self learning – Men and women who have dropped out of school can again start learning and that too free of cost. Plenty of free lessons and courses are available online on a variety of subjects in all languages.

Communication – Computer literacy will help people to connect with each other in a different state, country and continent

Shopping – Online Shopping anything from anywhere at a lower price than the market

Learning new skills – One can learn new skills like baking, knitting and also a new game or sport

OBJECTIVES OF DIGITAL LITERACY INITIATIVE

  1. To create a cadre and network of trained digital consumer activists
  2. To empower vulnerable consumer groups by imparting digital literacy
  3. To help consumer in redressal of their complaints related to digital issues
  4. Advocacy on the digital issues emerging out during this project.
  5. Empower the trained group to reach out to others where constant help and updating from the project will be of assistance.
  6. Target a cross section of the community in a limited pilot phase and then tie up with a large corporate like Google / Microsoft / to take the initiative forward

Going Forward

The objectives of the project will be achieved in a phased manner by the following approach:

Train the Trainer Workshop
Consumer Voice will organise a one day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop for consumer 30 activists from Delhi NCR (Project region) to train them on digital issues. There will be intensive training session to equip them about issues related to handling digital devices (like computers, tablet PCs and smart phones) safe internet usage, related laws/regulations and available redressal avenues etc.

Digital Literacy Camps
Consumer Voice will organise total six Digital literacy camps with different categories of vulnerable consumer groups such as youngsters, women, elderly and rural. The purpose of these camps is to make them digitally literate to boost their confidence to join the digital economy and society.

Assistance to consumers in redressal of their complaints related to digital issues
Consumer Voice will help consumers in redressal of their complaints related to digital issues. This will be a continuous activity and will continue even after the project duration.

Advocacy on the Digital Issues
We will be taking up the issue faced by digital consumer with relevant authorities during the project. The advocacy strategy will be devised based on the issue emerged. It may involve submission of representation to policy makers, regulators, involving media and legislative advocacy.

Consumers in India are witnessing rapid digitization and technological advancements in all fields of their day to day life and the Government is also focusing on its initiative “Digital India”. It is very important that the consumers are aware and informed of common Do’s and Don’ts, advantages and disadvantages to equip themselves to better adapt to this change.

In the above context and as a part of  Digital literacy initiative Consumer VOICE Organised Digital Literacy workshop (Training of Trainers) in collaboration with Centre for Social Change and Bhartiya Manav Kalyan Samiti Sansthan on 19 August 2017 at Reverside Club, Mayur Vihar Phase-1 Extention as a part of project activities supported by Consumentenbond and Consumers International.

Mr Amitesh Verma, Secretary- Centre for Social Change, introduced the speakers and guests and outlined the agenda for the workshop.

In his theme address, Mr S. C. Sharma, President- Bhartiya Manav Kalyan Samiti, highlighted that given the growing trend of digitalization there is a need of concerted and coordinated efforts by governments, regulators and businesses to ensure consumers’ interests are safeguarded.

Speakers from Consumer VOICE, Mr Hemant Upadhyay, Mr Gopal Ravi Kumar and Mr Subash Tiwari, discussed the urgent need of digital literacy in the age of economic reforms, the regulatory framework to effectively address the complexity of digital transactions, safety steps during E-commerce activities and important Do’s and Don’ts for consumers to keep in mind. The presentations from Consumer VOICE were followed by a very interactive Q&A session.

Chief Guest, Mr Vijay Satokar- Veteran Journalist and Former Editor, Press Trust of India, shared with the audience that he himself does not know much about cell phones and often takes his son’s help when it comes to digital technology. He pondered if this is happening to highly literate people imagine the plight of the common man.

A special address was also delivered by Ms Alka Rai from Ambedkar University, which highlighted some latest facts and figures related to increasing use of digital technology in India.

Ms Reeta Nayak, President- Centre for Social Change, concluded the workshop with a summary of the discussions and vote of thanks to the speakers, guests and participants. The workshop was followed by lunch, where the speakers and guests further interacted with the participants.

The workshop was attended by over 65 participants from diverse professional fields as well as age groups.

In the series of Digital literacy Initiative Consumer VOICE Organised Digital Literacy workshop (Training of Trainers) in collaboration with Dignity Restoration and Grievance Settlement Association on 27th July 2017 at Jawaharlal Nehru National Youth Center ,New Delhi as a part of project activities supported by  Consumentenbond and Consumers International.

The purpose of the project “Digital Literacy” is to make Consumers digitally literate and boost their confidence to use internet and join the digital world and economy.

The workshop covered different topics on digital literacy. The welcome address was given by Dr. Arun Kumar of Dignity Association. In the introductory message Ms. Rinki Sharma, Head- Projects & CSR, Consumer VOICE explained objectives of the workshop and importance of safety precautions in fast changing digital scenario.

Further Mr. Subhash Tewari expert from Consumer Voice highlighted the importance and need of Digital literacy in day to day work through presentation so that consumers are able to get firsthand knowledge of Digital Literacy.

Various aspects of digital literacy were covered in the interactive session of the workshop such as best practices to be used while using various  digital platforms, grievance redressal mechanism, the different challenges ,consumer rights, and different platforms available for digital transactions and services.

The event was attended by more than 70 participants from different groups including consumers, students, representatives of consumer organizations. Participants showed enthusiasm towards gaining the knowledge and shared views on the use of Digital mechanism, types of prevalent practices and also shared their experiences.

The workshop was successful in achieving its objectives. Participants appreciated the efforts of Consumer VOICE in imparting a very useful education with regard to digital literacy.

In the series of Digital literacy initiative Consumer VOICE Organised Digital Literacy workshop (Training of Trainers) in collaboration with Bhartiya Manav Kalyan Samiti Sansthan on 13th July 2017 at Maclead Certifications Greater Noida as a part of project activities supported by  Consumentenbond and Consumers International.

The purpose of the project “Digital Literacy” is to make Consumers digitally literate and boost their confidence to join the digital economy and society.

The workshop covered different topics on digital literacy. The welcome address was given by Mr.S.C.Sharma, President Bhartiya Kalyan Samiti Noida. In the introductory message Mr.Amarjeet Panghal, Advisor Projects, Consumer VOICE explained objectives of the workshop and invited attention of the participants on knowing Digital mechanism. He also emphasized on the utility of precaution to be taken in use of electronic methods related to Digital Mechanism.

Further Mr.Subhash Tewari expert from Consumer Voice highlighted the  importance and need of Digital literacy in day to day work through presentation so that consumer able to get first hand knowledge of Digital Literacy.

The event was attended by more than 70 participants from different groups including Retired Officers, House wives, traders along with shopkeepers and villagers. Participants showed enthusiasm towards gaining the knowledge and shared views on the use of Digital mechanism in day to day marketing.

They also pointed out the benefits of using Aadhar Card in respect to accidental cases.  Thereafter, a session of questions and answers was arranged and participants raised their questions which were answered by experts.
Shri Kanhaiya Lal, Secretary, Ex. Noida Officers Association while thanking participants explained as to how Digital Literacy and Awareness is needed for careful use of Electronic Mechanism.

Chief Guest of the programme Mr.Teja Gurjar, Member of Telephone Advisory Committee, UP and renowned social worker insisted upon the use of Digital Literacy and desired that this workshop will be proved very useful on the subject.

Shri S.C.Sharma expressed vote of thanks and hoped that all participants will go with full knowledge about Digital Literacy.
In this way workshop was successful in achieving its objectives. Participants appreciated the efforts of Consumer VOICE in imparting a very useful education with regard to digital literacy.

An interactive programme on Digital Literacy was organised by Consumer VOICE in association with Dignity Restoration and Grievance Settlement Association at Prerna Bhawan Faridabad, Haryana on July 11, 2017 as a part of project activities supported by Consumentenbond and Consumers International.

The purpose of the project “Digital Literacy” is to make Consumers digitally literate and boost their confidence to join the digital economy and society.

Through this workshop consumers are able to get first-hand knowledge of Digital Literacy in order to equip themselves and further impart such knowledge gained to cross-section of the society to cover different categories of vulnerable consumer groups such as youngsters, women, elderly and rural folk.

The event was attended by 125 participants The welcome speech was delivered by Dr.Arun Kumar of Dignity Restoration and Grievance Settlement Association followed by introductory message by Mr.Amarjeet Singh , Advisor projects, Consumer VOICE.

The workshop included a Power Point Presentation by Mr. Gopal Ravi Kumar and Mr. Subas Tiwari of Consumer VOICE on Digital Literacy for the uninitiated (an overview) covered topics:
