Seminar on Alcohol Awareness: Health, Social, and Legal Impacts in Jagannath University, Jhajjar

On December 9, 2024, Consumer VOICE, Delhi in collaboration with HTA Haryana organised student sensitisation program on Ill Effects of Irresponsible Alcohol consumption’ in Jagannath University, Jhajjhar. This program aimed to educate university students about the serious consequences of alcohol consumption, and also addressing its health, social, and legal impacts. By leveraging academic expertise and social activism, the program provided a comprehensive understanding of the risks associated with alcohol consumption and strategies for creating healthier, addiction-free communities.

With the participation of influential speakers, including educational leaders, social activists, and health specialists, the event made an impact not only at the university level but also at the broader societal level, with thousands benefiting indirectly through media outreach.

Objectives of the seminar

  • To educate young adults, particularly university students, on the detrimental effects of alcohol on physical and mental health.
  • To highlight the social and legal consequences of alcohol abuse, including its impact on road safety and relationships.
  • To promote de-addiction initiatives and offer guidance on making informed lifestyle choices that contribute to personal well-being and societal health.
  • To foster long-term awareness and change by encouraging students to become ambassadors of a healthy, alcohol-free lifestyle in their communities.

The event featured esteemed guests from various fields, including academia, law enforcement, and social activism. Their insights provided a multidisciplinary perspective on the issue, making the seminar comprehensive and impactful.

Professor Poonam Malik, Registrar, Jagannath University welcomed the attendees and provided an institutional perspective on the issue. She reinforced the university’s commitment to supporting initiatives that encourage students to lead healthy, responsible lives. “The ripple effect of today’s seminar will benefit not only the students present but also the communities they return to, as they share the knowledge gained today,” she remarked. 

As the chief guest, Professor (Dr.) Prasad Rao P.V.V., Vice Chancellor, Jagannath University stated that “Educational institutions must lead the charge in cultivating a generation that understands the importance of mental and physical health and steers clear of substances like alcohol that threaten both.” He highlighted the long-term physical health risks associated with alcohol consumption, such as liver disease and cardiovascular complications, linking these issues to larger societal challenges.

Hitesh Hindustani, President, HTA Haryana articulated concerns over how this trend poses threats to public health, safety, and societal well-being. Hindustani urged the youth to exercise responsibility, noting, “The future of the nation lies in your hands. It’s up to you to make choices that lead to a healthier and more prosperous society.”

Aacharya Kuldeep provided an in-depth analysis of alcohol’s physiological and psychological impacts, referencing data from the World Health Organization (WHO). His expertise in Ayurveda and Yoga provided a holistic approach to combating addiction through lifestyle changes and mental discipline.Representing law enforcement, SI Naresh highlighted the direct correlation between alcohol consumption and road accidents, which continue to claim thousands of lives annually in India. “Driving under the influence is not just a personal risk; it endangers the lives of others on the road,” he warned.

Mr. Hemant Upadhyay, Advisor, Consumer Voice Delhi, addressed the far-reaching social implications of alcohol addiction, emphasizing how it erodes personal relationships and deteriorates social standing. “Addiction isolates individuals from their social networks, leading to alienation and strained family dynamics,” he noted.

The seminar at Jagannath University has been widely regarded as a resounding success. It not only informed the students about the dangers of alcohol consumption but also equipped them with tools and strategies to resist peer pressure and make healthier life choices. The comprehensive approach, blending medical science, social awareness, and legal perspectives, created a well-rounded discussion that resonated with the audience. The event was attended by over 150 university students and was covered extensively by both print and digital media, ensuring its message reached a wide audience beyond the university.

VOICE society supported by Consumer Guild and in collaboration with Department of Public Administration, University of Lucknow successfully organised a seminar on “Sensitization of Students about Ill of Irresponsible Drinking” at DPA Hall, Lucknow University campus on 24th April, 2024.

The seminar which was presided by Prof. N.L. Bharti-Head Dept. of Public Administration, University of Lucknow was attended by more than 100 students, and faculty members. 

While Hemant Upadhyay (Consumer VOICE) spoke on social issues; Dr. Pravesh Dwivedi (Director-Samarth) on Medical issues and Traffic Inspector Radhey Shyam Singh addressed the students on legal issues on irresponsible drinking

These was a healthy and informative QA session of about 1 hour where the whole audience participated.

On the occasion of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) 2024, Consumer Guild Lucknow, in collaboration with Consumer VOICE, organized a Walk March to honour the lives lost in road traffic accidents and raise awareness about road safety. The event was a heartfelt tribute to the victims of traffic accidents and a powerful call to action to curb over-speeding, one of the leading causes of fatalities in Uttar Pradesh, especially among pedestrians.

A Call for Action to Address Over-Speeding

The Walk March aimed to shed light on the rising number of road accidents due to over-speeding, a key factor behind the increasing fatalities on Uttar Pradesh’s roads. Over-speeding not only endangers drivers but also threatens pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. The march emphasized the urgent need for collective action to combat this menace and save lives.

Solidarity with Victims’ Families

The event also served as a platform for expressing solidarity with the families affected by road traffic accidents. The participants, along with stakeholders, stood together in remembrance of the victims, reinforcing the need for stronger preventive measures to avert future tragedies.

Abhishek Srivastava, President of Consumer Guild, welcomed the attendees and set the tone for the event. He highlighted the importance of WDoR’s global mission to honor the victims of road traffic accidents, provide support to their families, and emphasize the critical need for road safety reforms worldwide.

Key Messages from the Dignitaries

The Chief Guest, Shri Inder Pal Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), delivered a strong message about the importance of following traffic rules and the dire consequences of over-speeding. He urged both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant and adhere to road safety guidelines.

Shri Devesh Shahi, Traffic Inspector, and Shri Sumit Mishra, Road Safety Trainer, shared their expertise, providing valuable insights on safe driving practices and the impact of speed on road accidents. They also encouraged better awareness and education around the significance of traffic regulations.

Syed Ehtesham, an expert on traffic regulations, also joined the discussion, offering guidance on how traffic management and enforcement can play a key role in reducing road fatalities.

Participation and Collective Effort for Safer Roads

Over 400 participants, including students, teachers, advocates, social workers, and concerned citizens, came together in a collective effort to raise their voices for safer roads. The march symbolized a united call for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater attention to road safety measures.

The participants were all aligned in their demand for immediate action to reduce over-speeding and enhance public awareness. A memorandum was submitted to key stakeholders in the state government, urging them to implement stricter measures to curb speeding. The memorandum also called for the adoption of speed management guidelines proposed by IIT Kharagpur to regulate and manage speed limits more effectively across Uttar Pradesh.

Moving Forward: A Commitment to Road Safety

This event served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing road safety challenges and the need for continuous advocacy and reforms.     On the solemn occasion of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WoDR) 2024, the National Centre for Human Settlements & Environment (NCHSE), Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh in collaboration with Consumer Voice, New Delhi, and key local partners including Mahila Chetna Manch, Help Box Foundation, Bhopal Bicycle Riders Group, and Aadarsh Welfare Foundation, organized a powerful and poignant Cyclothon in Bhopal. The event’s central theme, “Reduce Speed, Save Lives,” served as a call to action for the immediate reduction of over-speeding on roads in Madhya Pradesh, which remains one of the leading causes of road fatalities in the region.

    Expressing Solidarity and Raising Awareness

    The cyclothon aimed to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in road traffic accidents while showing support for the grieving families. This collective remembrance emphasized the critical need for concerted efforts to reduce speeding and improve road safety across Madhya Pradesh. Over 100 participants, including students, citizens, and cyclists, took part in this symbolic event, spreading awareness of the dangers of over-speeding and urging immediate steps to curb the growing trend of road accidents.

    Event Highlights and Support from Authorities

    The event commenced at Ankur School, where Shri Avinash Shrivastava, Deputy Director of NCHSE, welcomed the participants and shared the event’s significance. He highlighted the theme of the day, emphasizing the urgent need for road safety reforms and the reduction of speed limits to save lives.

    The chief guest for the event, Shri T.L. Pandro, Sub-Inspector of Traffic Police, delivered a powerful address, urging all road users to comply with traffic rules and acknowledging the severe consequences of over-speeding. He specifically mentioned how speeding, especially in populated areas, endangers everyone on the road, from pedestrians to cyclists. After his speech, he flagged off the cyclothon, which traversed key roads in Bhopal, spreading messages about road safety and responsible driving.

    Throughout the Cyclothon, participants displayed various road safety messages on their bicycles, creating visible awareness in the city. These messages called for a reduction in speed limits, better law enforcement, and an overall cultural shift towards safer roads.

    At the conclusion of the event, certificates of appreciation were presented to all participants, recognizing their commitment to promoting road safety and honoring the victims of traffic accidents.

    A Memorandum for Immediate Action

    The event culminated in a memorandum addressed to Hon’ble Transport Minister and the Additional Chief Secretary, Transport Department of Madhya Pradesh. The memorandum called for stronger, more immediate measures to combat over-speeding and to adopt the speed management guidelines proposed by IIT Kharagpur. This request is grounded in alarming statistics from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ 2022 report, which highlighted the gravity of the situation:

    • A staggering 54,432 road accidents occurred in Madhya Pradesh in 2022 alone.
    • These accidents led to 13,427 fatalities, with over-speeding being directly responsible for 3,247 deaths.

    The memorandum urged the state authorities to take immediate action to implement these guidelines, which aim to better regulate speed limits across Madhya Pradesh and prevent further tragedies.
