Airtel deducts pre-paid balance
Dear Editor
It seems that Bharti Airtel in UP East circle has decided to cross the limits of unprofessional behaviour. I had a balance of approximately Rs 210 but a day later on May 29, 2008, it was only Rs 19.66. I have never asked for any dialer tones on my connection but it was activated. I use Nokia 1110 and Nokia 1200 phones but Airtel has activated WAP services on my connection and is also sending me news content. While I was in Lucknow with visitors from US and other states, Airtel's services caused me embarrassment because I had only Rs 19.66 balance and Airtel started to remind of recharge whenever my guests wanted to use my phone for local contacts.

LIC does not bother to entertain claim
Dear Editor
My father had purchased a life insurance policy from LIC on in 1988. and was paying premiums on time. At that point in time we used to live in Siliguri, West Bengal and shifted to Gurgaon, Haryana, in 1993 and my father had to travel between the two cities.
During his tour to Siliguri in November 2005, due to a sudden attack of high blood pressure he was admitted to the Anandlok hospital in Siliguri on 23/11/08 in a conscious state of mind. Thereafter he deposited the premium which was outstanding on his account This policy which has been running for the last 17 years was revived during his life time but after he got admitted to the hospital. When my father expired, all required documents were submitted to the LIC branch in Siliguri. Besides, regular reminders, along with a grievance letter were written to the LIC of but we never got a reply.

The law says that revival of a life insurance policy can be done only during the life time of the insurer. In your case, the money was collected as insurance premium, but you need to ascertain if it was paid and if it is on record the payment was made on the date you have specified. If the person who collected the money did not deposit the amount (in case it was in cash), chances are that LIC may have no record of it. The law also says that the person who revives the policy by making the balance payment has to give a certificate that he is alive. If all these facts are in place, you may consider approaching a consumer court about your problem. |

Property tax: Delhi Municipal Service confuses tax-payers
Dear Editor
I had made a one-time payment on my real estate property in Tara Apartments, New Delhi in 1988. Having done this, I should have been given an exemption on paying any tax henceforth. Later the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) reneged on its promise and said that as the ratable value of the property has increased over the years, we will have to pay tax.
Last year, I read a report in The Times of India which said that people who have paid tax will be granted life time exemption from paying property tax and that a resolution to this effect had been passed by MCD. I would be very grateful, if you could help me with this problem.

We understand that you were given this assurance that once you have made a one-time payment, you were assured that no tax shall be payable thereafter. You should stick to your stand which is based on the assurance you were given. There may be several other persons like you who may be suffering with the same problem. You should keep ready with you some documents or paper clipping related to the news reports you have read and which indicate the promise or scheme by MCD under which you made payment in one go in 1988. It will not be possible for MCD to go back from their annoncement outright after tax payments have been accepted by them.
In case you would like to lodge a grievance, you can do that at http://delhigovt.nic.in/griev_red.asp You may also like to visit the MCD website: http://delhigovt.nic.in/muniserv.asp |
